How to use the Quran reader
Everything on the Quran pages is free, with nothing to install and no sign-in. This page explains each button.
Find a surah or a verse
- On the Quran page, type a surah’s name or number in the search box. Different spellings work: “yaseen” finds Yasin.
- To go straight to a verse, type the surah number and the verse number, like 2:255, then press Open.
- Inside a surah, press Surahs. At the top is Go to verse; below it is the list of all 114 surahs.
- Juz (30 parts) on the Quran page opens the verse where each part begins. Juz and mushaf pages also finds any of the 604 pages of the printed Madinah mushaf.
Choose a translation
- Press Options. The first choice is Translation.
- The list has translations in English, Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia. Choose Arabic only to hide the translation.
- Small numbered buttons inside some translations open the translator’s own note.
- Every translation is shown as its publisher gives it. The one on screen is named at the bottom of the page.
See how the Arabic sounds
In Options, switch on Pronunciation (transliteration). Each verse then shows its sounds in Latin letters, under the Arabic. It is an aid for reading along; it does not replace learning to read the Arabic.
Make the text larger, or change the layout
- Arabic text size: press A+ or A− in Options.
- Layout: Verse by verse shows each verse with its translation. Arabic page shows the Arabic alone, running on like a page of the mushaf.
- Colours: follow your device, Light or Dark. More colours are under More colours.
Arabic writing styles
In Options, under Arabic writing style, there are four ways of writing the same words:
- Uthmani: clear, open letters. This is what the page shows first.
- Madinah: the writing of the King Fahd Quran edition.
- IndoPak: the Nastaleeq style many readers in South and Southeast Asia learned with.
- Tajweed: the Madinah writing with colours that mark recitation rules.
The other styles are fetched when you choose them, so the first time can take a few seconds. If one cannot be loaded, the page says so and keeps the Uthmani text.
Explore the Tajweed colours
- Open a surah, for example Surah Al-Mulk, verse 2.
- Press Options and choose Tajweed under Arabic writing style.
- A row of colours appears under the buttons at the top, each with the name of what it marks. On a phone, slide the row sideways to see them all.
- Tap a colour, for example Qalqala (echo). The words carrying that colour stay bright and the rest fade. Tap it again to show everything.
- Press the play button beside the verse to hear it, and Repeat to hear it again.
The colours and their names are those of the Tajweed edition itself (the King Fahd Complex’s Tajweed pages, provided by Quran Foundation). This page shows where a colour appears; it does not teach the rule. A teacher is the right way to learn recitation.
Listen
- Press Listen to hear the surah from its beginning. Press the small play button beside any verse to start from that verse.
- The verse being recited is marked, and the page moves to keep it in view. If you scroll away, the page comes back to it after a few seconds. To stop the page moving, switch off Follow the recitation in Options.
- Choose a reciter from the list in the player. Reciters under “Highlights each word” mark each word as it is recited, when the Arabic writing style is Tajweed or IndoPak; in the other styles, and in the few verses whose words are not all timed, they mark the verse. To mark verses only, switch off Highlight each word in Options. Reciters under “Highlights each verse” mark each verse as it is recited. Those under “Plays the whole surah” play without marking verses, because no verse timings are published for them.
- Tap the star to keep a reciter in Your favourites, at the top of the list.
- Repeat plays the same verse again and again until you press it once more. It appears only for reciters that mark each verse.
- If your browser does not start the sound by itself, press the play button in the player.
Copy, share or read an explanation of a verse
Press the three dots beside a verse. You can copy the Arabic, copy the translation, copy a link to the verse, share it, or Read explanation. The explanation comes from one book, named at the top when it opens.
Your place and your settings
- The reader remembers the last verse you were reading, and your choices in Options, in this browser on this device only. There is no account and nothing to sign in to.
- The Quran page shows Continue reading when there is a saved place. Clear saved place removes it.
- Clearing your browser’s data for this website removes the saved place and settings. A private window does not keep them.
- Like the rest of this website, the Quran pages count page views, and the recitation, extra translations and writing styles are fetched from the services that provide them. The privacy policy says what that involves.
If something does not work
- No sound: check your device is not on silent, then try another reciter. Some reciters do not have every surah; the list says so.
- A translation or writing style does not load: the connection may be slow. Choose it again to retry.
- The page looks plain, with no buttons: scripts are switched off or blocked. The whole Quran and its translation can still be read; the extra features need scripts.
- Anything else: write to support@wahidah.app.
