Surah Al-Qamar

ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُ ۝١

The Last Hour draws near and the moon is split asunder.

وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ ۝٢

Yet, when they see a sign they [who deny the truth] turn their backs and say, "The same old sorcery!"

وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ ۝٣

They deny the truth and follow their own whims, every matter has its appointed time,

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ ۝٤

there has come to them many a tiding wherein there are warnings,

حِكْمَةٌۢ بَٰلِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ ۝٥

profound in wisdom, but all warnings have been of no avail:

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍ ۝٦

so ignore them. On the Day when the Crier will call out about a horrible event,

خُشَّعًا أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ ۝٧

with downcast eyes they shall come out of their graves, as if they were locusts milling about

مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ ۝٨

hastening towards the Crier. Those who deny the truth will cry, "This is such a hard day!"

۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَٱزْدُجِرَ ۝٩

The people of Noah denied [the truth] before them. They belied Our messenger saying, "He is mad!" He was rebuffed,

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَٱنتَصِرْ ۝١٠

so he cried out to his Lord, saying, "I am overcome, so help me!"

فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ ۝١١

So We opened the gates of the sky with water pouring down in torrents,

وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ ۝١٢

and We caused the earth to burst with gushing springs: so that the waters met for a purpose which had been decreed.

وَحَمَلْنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍ وَدُسُرٍ ۝١٣

We bore him on an [ark] which, made of planks and nails,

تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ ۝١٤

floated on under Our eyes: a vindication of him who had been rejected.

وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ۝١٥

We have left this as a sign: but will anyone take heed?

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ۝١٦

How terrible then was My punishment and My warning.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ۝١٧

We have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran. Is there anyone who would receive admonition?

كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ۝١٨

The people of 'Ad too rejected the truth. How terrible was My punishment and My warning.

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ ۝١٩

We sent a raging wind against them on a day of continuous calamity.

تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍ ۝٢٠

It swept people away as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees.

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ۝٢١

How [dreadful] was My punishment and My warning!

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ۝٢٢

We have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: is there anyone who would receive admonition?

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ۝٢٣

The tribe of Thamud also rejected Our warnings:

فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ ۝٢٤

they said, "Are we to follow a man from amongst ourselves? We would surely then fall into error and madness.

أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ ۝٢٥

Has the [Divine] message been revealed to him alone of all of us? No, he is a boastful liar."

سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُ ۝٢٦

[We said to him] "Tomorrow they shall know who is the boastful liar,

إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْ ۝٢٧

for We are [going to] send the she-camel as a trial for them, so watch them and be patient.

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌ ۝٢٨

And tell them that the water [of the well] is to be divided between them, and that each one should drink in turn."

فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ ۝٢٩

But they called their companion who took a sword and hamstrung her.

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ۝٣٠

How [terrible] were My punishment and My warnings!

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ ۝٣١

Then We sent a single blast against them and they became like dry stubble which has been trampled upon.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ۝٣٢

Indeed, We have made the Quran easy to learn lessons from. Is there anyone who would receive admonition?

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ۝٣٣

The people of Lot rejected Our warnings.

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَٰهُم بِسَحَرٍ ۝٣٤

We sent a sandstorm against them which destroyed them all, except the family of Lot, whom We saved at the break of dawn,

نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَ ۝٣٥

as a blessing from Us: this is how We reward the thankful.

وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ۝٣٦

Lot warned them of Our punishment, but they disputed the warnings --

وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ۝٣٧

they even wanted to seduce his guests -- but We blinded them, and said, "Taste My punishment now that you have scorned My warnings!" --

وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ ۝٣٨

and early in the morning the punishment decreed overtook them --

فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ ۝٣٩

"Taste My punishment now that you have scorned My warnings!"

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ۝٤٠

We have made it easy indeed to learn lessons from the Quran. Is there anyone who would receive admonition?

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ ۝٤١

Surely warners came to the people of Pharaoh.

كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ ۝٤٢

They, too, rejected all Our signs. So We seized them with the seizure of One Mighty, Omnipotent.

أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ ۝٤٣

Are your people who deny the truth better than those? Or have you been given immunity in the Scriptures?

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌ ۝٤٤

Or do they say, "We are a united group, and we are bound to prevail?"

سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ ۝٤٥

The hosts shall soon be routed and they shall be put to flight.

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ ۝٤٦

Indeed, the Hour of Doom is their appointed time, and the Last Hour will be the most severe, and the most bitter.

إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ ۝٤٧

The evil-doers are indeed sunk in error and folly --

يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ ۝٤٨

on the Day when they are dragged into the fire on their faces, it will be said to them, "Now feel the touch of Hell!"

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ ۝٤٩

We have created everything in due measure;

وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِٱلْبَصَرِ ۝٥٠

We command but once: Our will is done in the twinkling of an eye;

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ۝٥١

We have indeed destroyed many a people like you. Is there anyone who would receive admonition?

وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ ۝٥٢

All their deeds are recorded in their books:

وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌ ۝٥٣

every action, small or great, is noted down.

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَنَهَرٍ ۝٥٤

The God-conscious will find themselves in gardens and rivers,

فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭ ۝٥٥

in the seat of truth with an all-powerful sovereign.
