Surah Al-Waqi'ah

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ ۝١

When the inevitable event takes place,

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ۝٢

and there can be no denying its happening,

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ۝٣

some shall be abased and others exalted.

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا ۝٤

When the earth is shaken violently,

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ۝٥

and the mountains are totally shattered and crumble to pieces

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا ۝٦

and become like scattered dust particles,

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَٰثَةً ۝٧

[on that Day] you shall be divided into three groups.

فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ۝٨

Those on the Right -- how blessed are those on the Right!

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ۝٩

Those on the Left -- how unlucky are those on the Left!

وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ۝١٠

The third to the fore shall be the foremost.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ۝١١

They shall be the nearest to God.

فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ۝١٢

They will dwell in the Gardens of Bliss:

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ۝١٣

a large group of the early believers,

وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ۝١٤

and a lesser number from the later generations.

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ ۝١٥

Seated on couches wrought in gold and encrusted with precious stones,

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ۝١٦

reclining on them facing each other;

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ۝١٧

they will be waited on by ageless youths

بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ ۝١٨

carrying goblets and ewers and cups filled with the purest wine,

لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ ۝١٩

neither causing headaches, nor intoxication;

وَفَٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ ۝٢٠

along with fruits of their choice;

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ ۝٢١

and the meat of any bird that they may desire;

وَحُورٌ عِينٌ ۝٢٢

and fair maidens with large, lustrous eyes

كَأَمْثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ ۝٢٣

like the pearls in their shells:

جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ۝٢٤

shall be their recompense for their deeds.

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا ۝٢٥

They will not hear therein any vain or sinful talk,

إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَٰمًا سَلَٰمًا ۝٢٦

only the words of peace and tranquillity.

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٢٧

Those on the Right, how fortunate are those on the Right!

فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ ۝٢٨

They shall recline on high amidst lote trees without thorns

وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ ۝٢٩

and clustered bananas,

وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ ۝٣٠

and spreading shade

وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ ۝٣١

and flowing water,

وَفَٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ ۝٣٢

and fruits in abundance,

لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ ۝٣٣

never-ending and unrestricted,

وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ ۝٣٤

on raised couches.

إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً ۝٣٥

We have created maidens perfectly

فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا ۝٣٦

and made them virgins,

عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا ۝٣٧

loving companions, matching in age,

لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٣٨

for those on the Right,

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ۝٣٩

a large group of the earlier people

وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ۝٤٠

and a large group of those of later times.

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ۝٤١

Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left!

فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ ۝٤٢

They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water,

وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ ۝٤٣

and under the shadow of black smoke,

لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ ۝٤٤

neither cool nor refreshing.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ۝٤٥

They had been affluent before,

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ۝٤٦

and they persisted obstinately in awful sin,

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ۝٤٧

and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again?

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ۝٤٨

And also our forefathers?"

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ۝٤٩

Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ ۝٥٠

will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day.

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٥١

Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth,

لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ ۝٥٢

shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum,

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ ۝٥٣

and fill your bellies with it,

فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ۝٥٤

and shall drink boiling water on top of that.

فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ ۝٥٥

You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink."

هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ ۝٥٦

This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement.

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ۝٥٧

We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ ۝٥٨

Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge --

ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَ ۝٥٩

did you create it or did We?

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ ۝٦٠

It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ۝٦١

from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of.

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٦٢

You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ ۝٦٣

Have you thought about what crops you plant?

ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ ۝٦٤

Is it you who cause them to grow or do We?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ ۝٦٥

If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting,

إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ ۝٦٦

"We are ruined,

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ۝٦٧

nay, we are deprived [altogether]."

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ ۝٦٨

Have you considered the water that you drink?

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ ۝٦٩

Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ ۝٧٠

If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ ۝٧١

Have you thought about the fire that you kindle.

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ ۝٧٢

Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We?

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ ۝٧٣

We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ۝٧٤

So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme.

۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٧٥

Nay, I swear by the setting of the stars --

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ ۝٧٦

and, indeed, that is a most mighty oath, if you only knew --

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ ۝٧٧

that this is indeed a noble Quran,

فِى كِتَٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ ۝٧٨

in a well-guarded preserved Book,

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ ۝٧٩

which none can touch except the purified.

تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ۝٨٠

It is a revelation sent down from the Lord of the worlds.

أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ ۝٨١

How can you regard this discourse with disdain?

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٨٢

Do you make its denial your means of livelihood?

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ ۝٨٣

Why, then, when the soul of the dying man reaches the throat,

وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ ۝٨٤

and you are [at that moment] looking on [helplessly] --

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ ۝٨٥

and We are nearer to him than you, although you cannot see Us --

فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ ۝٨٦

why, then, if you are not subject to Our command,

تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ ۝٨٧

do you not cause the soul to return to him if you are truthful in your claim?

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ ۝٨٨

But if he [the dying person] is one of those brought near to God,

فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ ۝٨٩

then for him there shall be comfort and plenty and a Garden of Bliss;

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٩٠

and if he is of those who are on the Right,

فَسَلَٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ۝٩١

he will be greeted with, "Peace be to you," by those on the Right.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ ۝٩٢

But if he is one of those who rejected [the truth] and went astray,

فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ ۝٩٣

he will be welcomed with boiling water.

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ ۝٩٤

He will burn in Hell.

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ ۝٩٥

This is indeed the indubitable truth.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ۝٩٦

So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme.
